Following up what might be the epic doom metal subgenre’s apex is no easy task but after a five-year wait, the Chilean cult’s sophomore is here and it proves itself no less menacing than fans will expect.Capilla Ardiente’s sound is heavily inspired by the melancholic sound of giants such as Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus. Debuting in 2009 with the two song Solve et Coagula EP, Chile’s Capilla Ardiente represent the genre’s strengths when unbounded from the usual stereotypes that quickly became accepted as the norm and only further defied them on 2014’s Bravery, Truth and the Endless Darkness with a mixture of layered song structure, actively engaging riffing, and mystical occult atmosphere. However as much as doom metal bands understand this, they also tend not to do a whole lot with it and this results in a genre considerably more forgiving to aimlessly meandering songwriting, reverb-drenched production hiding mediocre riffing, and songs that go on for great lengths without justifying it with solid content. This is a practice that could be said to represent the essence of metal as a whole when stripped to its most base components. It’s the sort of reductive simplicity but massive surging power with a few simple chords creating huge swelling movements and funereal melody, the sort that has the power of some grand orchestral score but armed with little more than a conventional rock band setup. There is a particular type of grandeur to the genre of doom metal that is rarely replicated elsewhere in metal. And despite astrong showing by most any definition of American doom of the time, arguably falls just shy of the band's first outing, in the balance ofthings, making it a recommended, though not utterly essential purchase. Indeed, 'sonly major attempts at showing restraint come during the moodyintroductions to impressive opener 'Seeds of the Desolate' and theaforementioned 'Beneath the Fading Sun,' proving that more isn't alwaysnecessarily better - even in the realm of heavy metal. And vocalist 's more prominently mixed banshee vocals actually come off way too over the top, even recalling screamer at times, with their less disciplined exertions. Unfortunately, withthe exception of primary highlights like the uncommonly energetic 'ItCame Upon the Night' and the uncharacteristically mellow 'Beneath theFading Sun,' simply lack as many compelling riffs, overall, as its predecessor. But there was definitelyroom for improvement where this second album's production standards wereconcerned, and so 'sfirst noteworthy - and quite possibly lasting - impression wasinfusing a punchier mix, and crunchier metallic thump into new numberslike 'Black Castle,' 'The Final Sin,' and closing instrumental'Beyond.' - all of which also revealed some welcome self-editing, ascompared to that first album's lengthy excursions. Having been previously introduced by the group's excellent debut, said formula had immediately saddled them with the not altogether fair reputation of being America's answer to,so there was little they could do about that.
